✈️ First Officer – Commercial Jet Operations
Join FlySafair as a First Officer and help deliver safe, efficient and on-time commercial jet services across South Africa. You will support the Captain end-to-end, from thorough pre-flight planning through to post-flight reporting, while maintaining the highest standards of airmanship, regulatory compliance and customer care.
🧭 What you’ll do
- Operate the aircraft safely and efficiently, continuously monitoring flight path, systems, instruments, geographical position and terrain clearance.
- Execute all pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight procedures and checklists; manage required R/T communications.
- Maintain strict compliance with SACAA and ICAO regulations, the company Operations Manual (OM), aircraft SOPs, limitations and performance requirements.
- Provide the Captain with timely advice, information and assistance on routing, weather, fuel, alternates and operational restrictions.
- Keep an independent cross-check of navigation, altitude/height, speed and heading; immediately call out deviations, hazards, abnormal indications or warnings.
- Communicate professionally with company departments, service providers and passengers; uphold exemplary customer service.
- Complete all legal and operational documentation and reports accurately and on time, including IQSMS submissions.
- Support crew discipline, conduct, appearance, morale and professional standards.
- Assume command if the Captain becomes incapacitated; otherwise assist with operational and administrative duties as delegated.
🧰 Flight phases you’ll own
- Pre-flight: Review route, briefing sheets, forecasts, NOTAMs, destination and alternate runway states; complete OM checks and documentation; collaborate on fuel, alternates and operational restrictions.
- In-flight: Perform/monitor normal, abnormal and emergency checklists; verify procedures and instrument indications (especially altitude/height, speed and heading); manage required radio communications; identify and report any abnormal readings, lights or advisories.
- Post-flight: Action OM and FCOM procedures; file all required legal, operational and safety reports, ensuring continued compliance with the company Operations Manual.
🌟 What you’ll bring
- Education: Grade 12 (or equivalent).
- Licensing & medical: SACAA Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with Class 1 medical; SACAA ATPL preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 1,500 total hours including 500 hours multi-turbine; multi-crew experience essential.
- Advantageous: Boeing type rating; experience on commercial jets over 20 tons.
- Regulatory knowledge: Thorough understanding of national aviation regulations (SACAA, ICAO), Doc 8186, and CPL/ATPL licensing content.
- Clearances & conditions: No criminal record; willing to undergo drug and alcohol testing; no existing medical conditions.
- Right to work & documents: South African citizen with proof of identity, valid RSA passport, RSA driver’s licence and own transport.
- Availability: Willing to work irregular hours on a roster and to sign applicable training bond(s).

🛡️ Safety & compliance
Safety is paramount. You will champion full compliance with SACAA and international regulations, the airline’s Operations Manual, and aircraft-type SOPs, limitations and performance. Maintain vigilant, independent monitoring of aircraft position and terrain clearance throughout every phase of flight.
🧭 Bases & operations
Primary ATS location is Johannesburg, with rostered operations that may include Durban, Lanseria and Cape Town. Expect irregular hours aligned to operational requirements.
