Join a proudly South African flight deck and help deliver safe, efficient operations across a dynamic network. As a First Officer, you’ll train onto type (NTR) and progress on to fleet assignments based on seniority, while upholding world-class standards and regulatory compliance.
🧭 The opportunity
Operate as Pilot Flying and Pilot Monitoring in a multi-crew environment, executing flights in accordance with company SOPs, the Safety Management System, and all applicable regulations. You’ll collaborate closely with the Captain and wider operations team, bring sound airmanship to every sector, and contribute to a strong safety culture as you build seniority and broaden your experience.
🧰 What you’ll do
- Conduct all phases of flight in compliance with CAA, ICAO, IATA, FAA, and EASA regulations and company SOPs.
- Apply robust threat and error management, CRM, and decision-making to ensure safe, on-time performance.
- Complete preflight planning, performance calculations, fuel management, and dispatch coordination.
- Execute precise flight deck procedures, briefings, checklists, and normal/abnormal/emergency actions.
- Maintain meticulous records, logs, and reports; support audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Embody professional communication with crew, ATC, ground staff, and customers.
🌟 Minimum requirements
- Total time: 1,500 hours
- Multi-engine: 200 hours
- Licence: ATPL (Frozen), IR, ME – SACAA
- Medical: Class 1
- ICAO English: Level 4 or higher
- Passport: Valid, with ability to travel internationally (no sponsorship provided)
🎓 Education & knowledge
- Schooling/tertiary: Matric Certificate / Grade 12 results / N3 or relevant tertiary qualifications (SAQA accredited)
- Compulsory subjects: Mathematics or Statistics 101, and English (minimum D on higher grade or C on standard grade)
- Plus one of: Physical Science or Computer Science (minimum D on higher grade or C on standard grade)
- Regulatory knowledge: Detailed understanding of CAA, ICAO, IATA, FAA, and EASA frameworks and operational standards
- Professional skills: Strong business communication (verbal and written); resilient under pressure with a focus on change management
🧑✈️ Training & progression
- Type rating: Not required at application – full training provided on assignment
- ATPL upgrade: Obtain a valid (unfrozen) ATPL with multi-engine instrument rating within 4 years of employment with SAA
- Fleet assignment: Aircraft/fleet allocations determined by seniority
